A Brief Historical Timeline
1891-92: 12/25/91, San Diego (Russ High) plays first game on Christmas Day vs. “San Diego Football Club”, group of adults (result not know).
1898-89: 12/27/98, First game between two high schools: San Diego (Russ High) hosts Los Angeles High at Bay View Park and loses 11-0.
1900-01: 11/10/00, first game between two San Diego high schools: San Diego (Russ High) host Escondido at Bay View Park, Escondido won 23-0.
1916-17: San Diego (12-0) defeats Manual Arts 9-0 at Washington Park (Los Angeles) to win the Southern California championship.
1942-43: World War II cancels playoffs, shortens schedules and restricts travel to local (San Diego) teams only.
1955-56: San Diego High wins the only mythical national championship in county history.
1960-61: Inaugural season for the CIF-San Diego section with 33 teams.
1979-80: First season for 3 divisions (class 3A, 2A, IA).
1985-86: San Diego City Schools change from 8-millimeter film to video tapes for game tapes.
1985-86: CIF allows third party teams to video tape games for scouting.
1986-87: Inaugural season for 8-man.
1993-94: Adds a 4th division (I, II, III, IV).
2005-06: Adds a 5th division (I, II, III, IV, V).
2006-07: First season, since 1927, with a state championship game (I, II, III).
2008-09: State Championship game expands from 3 to 5 games (Open, I, II, III, Small Schools).
2013-14: Divisions based on program strength, not enrollment. Open division also added with an 8-team bracket.
2014-15 San Diego head coach Doug Packwood stepped down after 3 weeks, AD Danzia Montero promotes first female varsity head coach in San Diego, Knengi Martin; she was the JV head coach. Martin was not retained for the 2015-16 season.
2015-16 State playoffs expand so that every section champion advances to state semifinals.
