Because of San Diego’s weather, vast hotel listings and tourist attractions prep fans and teams need not leave the county to watch or participate in some of the top tournaments on the west coast and country.
It also helps that San Diego is one of the top areas for talent in volleyball, soccer and baseball with football and basketball coming in a respectable second place for the level of talent.
While concentrations of top talent for football and basketball can be found in many parts of the country, possibly higher concentations, no geographic area can best San Diego in volleyball, soccer or baseball talent.
San Diego is home to several tournaments that are the best on the west coast for that particular sport. The El Cajon Invitational (wrestling), Under Armour Holiday Classic (boy’s basketball) and the Lion’s Tournament (baseball) can all make that claim with no reservations.
The first major tournament of the year is the Mt. Carmel Movin’ Shoes Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 20th at Morley Field in Balboa Park. There are two divisions for the meet that include teams from all over California, Nevada and Arizona.
The invite is likely only second to the Mt. Sac Invitational on the west coast. Many teams from around the west coast attend the meet because the course is the exact same course that is used for the Foot Locker National Championships in December, the only national championship in high school sports.
Next on the agenda is the Asics California Challenge girl’s volleyball tournament hosted by Torrey Pines to be played at Alliant University. Like the cross country meet the California Challenge attracts many of the top programs in California, Nevada and Arizona and will take place on October 10th and 11th.
This year Bishop Gorman (NV), Buchannan (Clovis, CA), Ironwood Ridge (AZ), Marymount (Los Angeles, CA) and Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, CA) are among the many tentative commitments.
Just before Christmas some of the top wrestlers on the west coast will assemble in the east county for the 44th Annual El Cajon Invitational from December 19-20.
The invitational is hosted by Valhalla and competition takes place at the Ryan Athletic Center on the campus of Christian High School, which is a large, collegiate gym used by Christian High and San Diego Christian College.
The day after Christmas, for four days Torrey Pines will host the 25th Annual Under Armour Holiday Classic that has some of the top programs on the west coast from Washington to Arizona.
Essentially five tournaments in one there are multiple levels of play from the National Division to the Mayor’s Division. Many NBA players have played in the Holiday Classic that is the best tournament on the west coast. And unlike other top hoop tournaments the top division is well attended by prep hoop fans.
Finally, the Lions Club of San Diego hosts the Lions Tournament, which is the oldest, biggest and best baseball tournament in the country attracting teams from all over the country.
The baseball powers of Southern California will descend upon San Diego County from March 30 April 2 for the eight division tournament.
