The best moments from all four days of the Under Armour Holiday Classic revealed players of all shapes and sizes playing at the highest level of prep hoops.
Wesleyan Christian’s (High Point, NC) Theo Pinson ’14 had the best tournament, closely followed by Chino Hills’ (CA) Lonzo Ball ’16. Mater Dei’s (Chula Vista, CA) freshman Jaylen Hands ’17 had his coming out party, not starting the American Division championship game but leaving the tournament with an All-Tournament selection.
The best game nearly nobody saw was the seventh place game between Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland, CA) and Wesleyan Christian (High Point, NC). The game was moved up the freeway to Santa Fe Christian where the Mayor’s Division was played because the American Division final is played at Torrey Pines and a National Division consolation game needs to be moved to another division’s gym.
The game featured two friends going at it as O’Dowd’s Ivan Rabb ’15 and Wesleyan’s Theo Pinson ’14 (North Carolina) conducted a dunk fest. Early on Rabb gestures to Pinson about keeping tabs on the dunks and the game was on. Wesleyan’s Michael Buckland ’16 lost a tooth in the game.
Loyola (Los Angeles, CA) easily defeated Centennial (Corona, CA) for the National Division championship. Junior Max Hazzard ’15 was named the most valuable player of the tournament on a team loaded with D1 senior talent, which included Thomas Welsh ’14 (UCLA) and Parker Jackson-Cartwright ’14 (Arizona), Thomas Lapham ’14 (Tufts), Khalil Bedart-Ghani ’14 (Yale). If Austin Hatch ’14 (Michigan) was with the team Max Hazzard may not even be a starter.
