STAT UPDATE: State # 2 Centennial and # 13 St. Bonaventure combined for 1,380 offensive yards in the U-T Honor Bowl at Oceanside. Centennial racked up a Southern section record of 886 offensive yards while St. Bonnie had 494 yards. Cal-bound Tre Watson ’14 led the way for Centennial with a school record 466 yards rushing on 37 carriers while scoring seven TDs.
The record setting game was live before a TV audience, while CalHiSports Ronnie Flores and Los Angeles Times Eric Sondheimer were in the press box. Several other media outlets were present, not to mention title sponsor U-T who had John Maffei covering the event more than the game, so the record setting game was well documented.
The problem is many prep games do not have official scorers like at the collegiate and professional levels so reporters scramble to document the correct numbers. Usually necks turn back and forth to confirm along press row what the correct yardage is for a particular play or game. In this case there were multiple yardage totals among different media outlets while some reported the numbers as “unofficial” or noted somehow that the numbers may not be accurate.
The best approach when documenting stats is to go with the most prominent media outlet present because that outlet will have the biggest megaphone and therefore those numbers have the strongest chance to stick. CalHiSports began by documenting prep records in the state back in the 1970’s so those numbers will most likely stick because they will be part of the CalHiSports record book.
Centennial QB Robert Webber '14 was 21 for 30, 346 yards with three TD. Webber also ran for 77 yards on 11 carries.
Alabama commit QB Ricky Town '15 passed for 271 yards, completing 19 of 29 pass attempts for St. Bonaventure while RB Marcus Chambers '15 ran for 235 yards on 25 carries with three TD.
Alabama transplant Jesse Bailey of the Alabama San Diego Fan Club was in attendance at the game. Centennial’s lineman Viane Talamaivo ’14 is also committed to Alabama. The Bama fan’s remarks can be see on the Ricky Town video above.
The game was marred by one serious injury to Davonte Nunnery ’14 of St. Bonaventure who was taken away by ambulance after an accidental blow to the head.
UPDATE: Davonte Nunnery said through Twitter: "I just want to say thank you all for the support! Im ohkay (sic) and just need time to recover love you all! Keep praying for me thanks."
The game was the final of four games over two days at Oceanside for the U-T Honor Bowl. With the 8 pm kickoff time, 124 points scored and the 20-minute delay due to the injury the game ended around 11:20 pm.
