San Diego is a destination city for top prep tournaments on the west coast for two primary reasons. First, the weather is much better than Arizona, Nevada and northern California. Secondly, San Diego is a one-day drive or hour-long plane trip for Arizona, Nevada and most northern California schools. Which makes a tournament trip to San Diego long enough to be a bonding experience for teams but short enough not to tax a team’s finances or schedule too much.
Also, with only a handful of top programs for each sport in San Diego it is much easier to establish a tournament as the best tournament in town as opposed to the Los Angeles-Orange county area, which has many top programs competing to host the top tournament in any particular sport.
One major tournament this fall in San Diego is the Asics California Challenge girl’s volleyball tournament. On October 11th and 12th Torrey Pines hosts one of the top girl’s volleyball tournaments on the west coast. Among the teams from outside the area include Clovis West (Fresno), Mater Dei (Santa Ana), Marymount (Los Angeles), Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) and Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV). Local teams include Bonita Vista, Cathedral, La Costa Canyon, La Jolla Country Day, Poway, Santa Fe Christian and host Torrey Pines.
Last year state power Marymount won the tournament and six of the top 10 team places were held by teams outside of San Diego. Torrey Pines placed third, Cathedral and Canyon Crest tied for fifth and La Costa Canyon placed ninth.
Some of the top southern California boy’s water polo teams will be playing in the America’s Finest City Invitational on September 27th and 28th, hosted by Coronado. Past teams have included Buchanan (Clovis), Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood), Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach), Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) and Ventura. Local teams have included Cathedral, Eastlake, La Jolla, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Torrey Pines, Vista and host Coronado.
The Mt. Carmel/Movin Shoes Cross Country Invite is Saturday, September 21st and takes place at Balboa Park’s Morley Field. Two reasons why so many teams from around the southwestern United States are attracted to the invitational is the weather and the national championships are held on the same course. Some of the teams to participate include Bonanza from Nevada, 13 schools from Arizona including Brophy Prep, Desert Mountain and Ironwood Ridge as well as Modesto, Burroughs (Ridgecrest), Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo), M.L. King (Riverside). It is arguably the second best cross country race in the state behind the Mt. Sac Invitational.
The field hockey elite of San Diego will come together on Saturday, September 21st and 28th at Serra for the top field hockey tournament.
