The newest public high school will open in two weeks as Sage Creek becomes the second high school in the Carlsbad Unified School District. The school will open with only freshman and will be a school of choice, much like Canyon Crest Academy. There will be no football team but Sage Creek will have a field hockey team unlike Carlsbad so Sage Creek field hockey will not have to compete with any football team for field time, and vice versa at Carlsbad.
The six-year process to build the new school cost about $ 104 million and was completed in April. The school office opened today and the first day of school is Wednesday, August 28th with the school running on the trimester schedule. The mascot name will be the Bobcats with the colors green, black and gold.
The target enrollment is 1,200 students for all four grades. Since CIF is moving to strength of program criteria instead of enrollment the division placement for playoff purposes will be sport specific and the CIF Commissioner will initially determine the division for each sport. Under CIF rules the teams can appeal any placement that may be too high or low. The school will be in the North County conference and will likely play in the Valley League initially.
The school surveyed eighth and ninth graders to determine how popular each sport was and since football will not be offered basketball became the most important sport with 82 boys and girls interested while 79 students were interested in soccer. Cheer only had one student vote, likely because of no football team. Of the single gender sports baseball had the most votes with 49 while softball had 20 votes.
There were four considerations for the school colors, the first was to cross-reference school colors of other San Diego area high schools to ensure the color scheme would not be so common. Two other considerations were to consult with a uniform sales representative to determine if the color scheme would be widely available while also getting feedback from the architect of the school. Also, the campus academic focus was considered when selecting school colors. Green & gold as well as green & orange were considered as part of a vote but lost out to green, black & gold.
Once the colors were decided the school began researching names for the mascot by referencing every mascot name in the state. The variables used to filter mascot options were if the mascot was pertinent to the region, will the school colors complement the mascot, is there a high level of uniqueness and can the mascot generate an element of school spirit. The mascot vote can down to Bobcats, Golden Hawks, Rattlers and Lobos with Bobcats winning the vote by getting 662 votes out of 1,776.
Three other schools in the state have Bobcats as their mascot. Boron and Hamilton (Anza) are both smaller schools that play in the Southern section and are not likely to play Sage Creek in the state playoffs. The third school is Paradise and it would take a state championship game for the two schools to meet in the playoffs and they should be in separate divisions.
Del Norte and Mission Vista were the last public high schools to open in 2009.
Which Public School is Next?
As for the next public high school Alpine was suppose to have a new school built by the Grossmont High School Unified School District by now but the district blames budget cuts and lower enrollment for the many delays.
The district’s 12th high school was funded by two bond measures so many Alpine residents believe the delay is for other reasons and even a Grand Jury last month concluded that the district needs to build the school or allow Alpine School District to become unified and build the school themselves.
Alpine High School is years away from any opening day.
