The Knights will be returning home this fall after playing all games on the road last year due to the complete reconstruction of the school campus. The gymnasium, stadium bleachers and concession facilities are on schedule to be open this fall according to the general contractor Lusardi Construction Company.
San Marcos was originally built in 1960 and in January 2012 Lusardi began contruction on the new campus with completion of the campus scheduled for the fall of 2014.
During construction the students have been attending classes in temporary facilities on site. There will be 425,000 square feet of school facilities once the new campus is completed, which will provide for 39% more students than the original campus. The $ 180 million campus recontruction was funded through Proposition K ($ 287 millon bond).
The project has been described as one of the largest high school construction projects in the state. Some unique features to save on money and maintenance include no exterior paint on the buildings, concrete floors that will never have to be replaced and the campus itself has a planned lifespan of at last fifty years and was designed to accommodate unknown upgrades and changes over the years.
