In the ten years of Mission Hills football only once have the Grizzlies missed the playoffs, in 2005. Mission Hills has reached the semifinals every year since 2006 and this year Mission Hills routed Oceanside 30-6 and was ranked # 1 in the county after the victory. But all of that was white noise to the focused Grizzlies who wanted to take home their first CIF title.
Oceanside (10-3) head coach John Carroll, who was still coaching from the press box because of an earlier health scare, commented before the game that the team that can play better under pressure will prevail.
Mission Hills (12-1) made multiple big plays including a one-handed catch in the endzone and pick six moments later. Oceanside sealed their fate with an errant hike on a punt attempt that resulted in a safety and a deficit too large to comeback as Mission Hills won 36-14.
Mission Hills has won the boys basketball, baseball and football section championships in the same calendar year. And the Grizzlies are on their way to establishing their football program as one of the best along with Oceanside, Cathedral, Helix Charter and Vista.
