Loyola is the oldest high school in Southern California having been established in 1865. The all-boys school is located two miles west of downtown Los Angeles and is the most experienced team in the National Division returning 11 players from their state semifinal team.
Last year Loyola lost to SoCal # 1 seed Santa Monica 53-50 in the division I state semifinal and return 11 players and three starters from that team. This year the preseason rankings have the Cubs top 50 nationally and # 6 in the state.
Not only are the Cubs experienced but their top two players balance each other well as 5-9 point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright ’14 can push the tempo or 7-0 center Thomas Welsh ’14 can establish the inside game.
Jackson-Cartwright, who will play at Arizona next year, was the 2011 state freshman of the year but has been plagued with injuries the past two years.
7-0 Thomas Welsh '14 will suit up for UCLA and is considered one of the most improved post players in the country.
6-6 forward Austin Hatch '14 has signed with Michigan.
6-3 guard Khalil Bedart-Ghani ’14 is headed east to Yale and give the Cubs another athletic guard.
6-0 guard Max Hazzard ’15 is the grandson of UCLA great Walt Hazzard.
On December 7th Loyola won The Tournament at Santa Monica by defeating Chaminade (West Hills, CA) 80-60. And on December 14th they won the 73rd Sax Elliot Invitational at Beverly Hills by defeating Serra (Gardena, CA) 63-33.
The Cubs will try to go 3-0 in tournaments this year.
