2006 was the first year that the NBA mandated the 1-year out and 19 years old rule to enter the NBA draft.  Without this rule the class of 2006 would have had multiple players in the NBA lottery.

In Sports Illustrated's college basketball preview (11.20.06) SI questioned, "Is this year's freshman class the best in history?"

Six of the seven freshman named in the SI article were from the 2006 McDonald's All-American class: Brandan Wright, Spencer Hawes, Kevin Durant, Chase Budinger, Thaddeus Young and Greg Oden.
