CIF-San Diego Section Field Hockey
A Brief Historical Timeline
1974-75: Inaugural season (winter) with 25 teams. Founding mother was Jody Johnston (El Cajon).
1983-84: Moved from winter to the fall partly because girls' soccer was taking too many of the potential players.
1984-85: With only 19 teams CIF commissioner Jan Jessop (a former player and coach) says "it'll (field hockey) probably fold in the next two or three years" (after the 1984 Olympic Games).
1986-87: Bonita Vista adds team.
1987-88: Rancho Buena Vista (new school) adds team.
1988-89: Hilltop adds team.
1998-99: Eastlake, Orange Glen, San Dieguito Academy add teams.
1998-99: Critical shortage of referees (16), including 6 new referees.
2001-02: Santana, Rancho Bernardo, Clairemont & Chula Vista add teams.
2002-03: Divisional play begins with divisions I and II.
2002-03: Pt. Loma, Valley Center & Castle Park add teams.
2003-04: Mt. Carmel & Helix Charter add teams.
2006-07: Canyon Crest Academy (new school) adds team.
